They started it! I still remember the day, it was Jan 6th 1986. It was an apple computer. I still hear it mocking me.

It was laughing with you not at you! Very very few understood PCs back then. Those of us who were in mainframes thought of them as toys, a lot of potential but very little present. I don't think any of us expected the explosion that occurred and certainly none of us could have predicted the world-shaking change of paradigm that the internet produced (whether or not Gore invented it.)

Very true, that day was the 1st day of the very first computer course ever offered by my high school. The only truely good piece of information I got from that class was my teacher saying not to be frustrated with computer, they are in fact stupid, knowing only what we enter into them.

And those that had somewhat of a clue are extremely rich today. But Gore did not invent the internet. Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf invented the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which moves data on the modern Internet, in 1972 and 1973. If any two people "invented the Internet," it was Kahn and Cerf - but they have publicaly stated that "no one person or group of people" invented the Internet. Sorry Al.

In 72-73 it was designed as a system to allow scientists to communicate directly to facilitate collaboration. However it escaped the lab and the rest is history - very recent and very major history, a creeping, oozing sort of history.

ROFL! Sounds like a conversation I was having the other night about what could escape Plum Island.

Well, it's not the jaw dropping, "This is history!" sort of event like watching the fall of the Berlin Wall and looking at each other with, "Did we just see that!?" looks. Plumb Island?

It is a very exciting history! I can barely remember how we functioned before the internet. But computers and I still have a love/hate relationship. I've become pretty proficient with them, but all out of necessity and self-training. An old Ziggy cartoon I have taped to my PC says it all: "I think I'm on my way to becoming a computer hacker 'cause the more I hack away at it, the better I get."

Plum Island is a small island between the north and south forks of Long Island that is used by the government as a level 3 infectious disease research center. It's very secure, but we were commenting on what would happen if anything escaped. Not a huge threat, but anything can happen. When you said how the internet escaped and oozed, it just reminded me of that.

I got into computers in '66 but didn't move to PCs till somewhere in the '90s. Complete 180 in thinking, moving from programming to using a computer. I agree, I have difficulty remembering what the world was like prePC and I don't think the changes are near over. Sorta like the prefire and postfire world.

If it's a government facility, it's not a question of "if" but rather "when".

    I hope not!

Absolutely, that was my point, but alas I was talking a real young 'un. They've been trying to get Level 4 status, but for some reason are not.
